Geography & Geology Group Hike in Glendalough
Recently, we had the pleasure of guiding an American university group through the stunning Glendalough Valley in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains.
The group, made up primarily of geography students, explored some of the valley's most impressive natural features while learning about the geology, landscape formation, local history, and folklore of the area.
One of our guides for the day is a geologist, who led discussions on the glacial formation of the valley, the surrounding rock types, and how the Wicklow landscape was shaped over thousands of years. Stops along the route included several key viewpoints where the group could clearly see the classic U-shaped valley carved by glaciers during the Ice Age.
Along the hike, we also discussed some of the human history connected to Glendalough, including the story of St. Kevin and the early monastic settlement that made the valley famous throughout Ireland and beyond.
As always, we like to mix the educational side of our walks with some local folklore and storytelling, helping visitors experience not only the landscape itself, but also the myths, wildlife, and traditions connected to the Wicklow Mountains.
The weather stayed on our side throughout the day, giving the group fantastic views across the valley and surrounding hills.
It was a pleasure to guide such an engaged and enthusiastic group, and we hope they left Wicklow with a deeper understanding of both the natural and cultural history of the area.
